From Cleaner to Officer – A Journey of Growth and Giving Back

Jiseth Garcia’s story is a powerful example of how meaningful work can lead to lasting change. Starting as a cleaner, she’s now a Health, Safety Environmental & Quality (HSEQ) Officer, supporting staff, improving safety, and helping shape UPC’s future.

“I’ve been working here for almost three years,” says Jiseth Garcia. “I started as a cleaner for a year and a half, and then I got the opportunity to work in the office as a HSEQ Officer because of my professional background back in Colombia. It was a great opportunity—I couldn’t be happier.”

Jiseth came over to Australia as an international student, balancing study with limited work hours. “It was a great to have the chance to earn money and keep studying. I felt welcome from the beginning. At UPC, you don’t feel alone. Everyone is at the same level, no matter your position. You meet people from different backgrounds and stories—it’s a real community.”

Her promotion from cleaner to HSEQ Officer was smooth, thanks to her firsthand experience. “I didn’t have to go through tough interviews. I already knew the staff, the cleaning activities, how the job worked. That helped me contribute more in my current role.”

Now, Jiseth supports operations from the office, focusing on staff safety and service delivery. “One of my tasks is looking out for the safety of others. I feel good when I help someone feel safe at work or when I follow up to make sure they have what they need at their workplace.”

She’s proud of the progress UPC has made. “Last year we got ISO certification. Now we’re more organised, with better procedures and processes. That’s impacting the community because it helps staff do better work.”

For Jiseth, a good day is a busy one. “I don’t like boring days,” she laughs. “When I have a lot to do and I achieve almost everything I planned—that’s a good day.”
