Community gardens are pretty special
We have some wonderful gardens across our communities where our residents can grow, harvest and cook fresh healthy produce. Many of these gardens are in partnership with other like minded organisations. Condell Growers and Sharers in Fitzroy and the Kensington Community Food Forest both grew from a vision of neighbourhood connection through planting, nurturing and harvesting fresh food.
At Condell we collaborated with 3000 acres, the City of Yarra, Connie Benn Centre, Cultivating Communities and Cubbies. The City of Melbourne, DHHS and local permaculture designer Jacqui van Heerden all joined us in creating the Food Forest. It was so great to see these inspirational projects featured in The Age recently.
Testament to importance of these gardens was the turn out at the Food Forest twilight Garden Party Launch at our mixed community site in Kensington.
Over 100 tenants and Kensington neighbours young and old enjoyed music, banner painting, fabulous food and great company.
Located on open space land offered by the Department of Health and Human Services, the Forest of over 90 species of fruits, berries, nuts, herbs and vegies, is planned, planted, nurtured and loved by residents. The Food Forest Care Team includes social and private residents. Learn more about the Forest on the Facebook page.
