Finding a home for life with Unison Housing

For many residents, there is a sense of “coming home,” when they settle into their Unison home.

Life’s challenges, for example health, financial issues and housing insecurity, are highly stressful. Finding an affordable, secure, long-term home is a welcome relief and as Carlos, a Unison resident explains, “it is the best of the best!”

Carlos is Argentinian born. He and his family moved to Melbourne’s West in the 70’s when he was a young boy.  After his school years he helped his dad in his carpentry business.

A family man, Carlos was there for his mum when his father passed away. Carlos has had ill health all his life, however he cared for his mum until her passing, which hit him very hard. Now alone, he explains, "I hit a wall."

“I struggled to find safe housing that I could afford.”

After moving from one unsuitable home to another, Carlos contacted Unison and moved into his home eight years ago.

A life of health challenges does not show as he smiles broadly when talking about his apartment.  “It is great! It is close to public transport and is in the heart of all the shops.”

“I get support through NDIS and all my medical support is close.”

Carlos proudly shows off his one-bedroom unit. “I can get around easily with my walker and I have lots of storage!”

"It’s good to have the Unison team on the ground floor, to contact if I have any problems. There is a sense of security here and I feel safe.”

“This is my home for life!” he says with a big grin.
