Unison launches Graduate Program: Investing in the Next Generation of Talent

Unison has welcomed its first intake of graduates under the Victorian Government’s Community and Social Services Graduate Program (CASS GP), reinforcing our commitment to developing future talent and building a strong, skilled workforce for the community housing and homelessness sector.
Our 12-month program will see graduates work across multiple areas within Unison, including Community Housing and Initial Assessment & Planning (IAP). Graduates have been integrated into our experienced workforce, where they receive mentoring, guidance, and structured learning opportunities to support their professional development.
“The graduate initiative is a practical expression of our commitment to invest in future practitioners, building capability and strengthening the workforce our sector needs for the future.” – James King, Unison CEO
As part of their induction, our graduates had the opportunity to learn more about Unison, including completing tours of several Unison properties, and essential training such as Quality, Risk and Compliance, record-keeping and information management systems. In the coming months, they will learn about Unison’s Private Rental Access Program (PRAP) and Supported Accommodation for Youth, helping them understand the different ways Unison supports renters and the community.
Mia is a Graduate Homelessness Intake Worker at Unison’s Initial Assessment & Planning (IAP) offices in Seddon and Werribee. In her role, Mia supports people experiencing or at risk of homelessness by providing advice and guidance on their housing options.
“My experience with the Unison Graduate Program has been incredibly positive so far, and I am truly grateful for the opportunity to be involved. I have received wrap-around support from both the Graduate Resource Centre (GRC), Unison and the broader IAP team, which has been invaluable as I begin my career in community and social services.” – Mia
The Graduate Program reflects Unison’s broader commitment to being an employer of choice. Through our People Strategy, we’re creating a workplace where people feel valued, supported to collaborate effectively, and have opportunities to realise their potential. Our aim is to foster a positive culture and invest in our people, helping build an employee experience that attracts, develops and retains talented workers.
By creating meaningful pathways into the sector and providing graduates with mentoring, practical experience and ongoing development, we’re helping build a capable and connected workforce that will continue delivering positive outcomes for renters and communities now and into the future.
